Stanley is a bubbly, determined child who continues to amaze everyone on a daily basis. Stanley always greets his friends with an emphatic “Hiii!” when he arrives at Trinity each day. He enjoys bubbles, riding his bicycle (as evidenced by his picture included) and stacking blocks and knocking them down. He likes to help document his vitals in his very own binder (just as the nurses do!) and loves taking his own temperature- along with everyone else’s temperature in his family!
Stanley Kellam started attending Trinity Child Care in 2016 when he was 10 months old. He was born prematurely at 30 weeks gestation and suffered from brain bleeds shortly after birth. Stanley has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, stemming from the brain bleeds, and a genetic disorder called Dravet Syndrome, a rare, drug resistant, epileptic disorder that results in frequent and prolonged seizures.
He receives multiple therapies at Trinity daily to ensure his progress. He participates in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy and really looks forward to “playing” with his therapists. He has been on this incredibly strict KETO diet to help manage his seizures for over two years and has seen a drastic decrease in the frequency and severity of his seizures. Over the summer, he had a Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) implant placed in his chest to reduce the frequency of seizures even more. This small device, similar to a pacemaker, can be triggered by swiping a magnet over his chest during a seizure; the magnet causes the device to send a burst of energy to his brain to halt or reduce the severity of the seizure. Staff working with Stanley at Trinity are trained to handle this device.
Trinity has been incredibly helpful to his parents, since it is a daily option for medical supervision, his parents can continue to go to work and school. “Being able to go to school while we know he is in the best care possible has been a huge blessing. Parents with medically fragile children often don’t have that support” says Stanley’s mother, Ammie. She is currently earning her Master’s Degree from Marywood University and her Husband, Allan, attends Johnson College for Diesel Mechanics.
This April, Stanley will celebrate his 5th birthday. He has beaten many odds related to his diagnoses and his future seems as bright as his smile.
